What is tooth-colored dental fillings?

Dental fillings replace tooth structure that has been damaged by a cavity, wear, or a small fracture. After the affected area is removed and cleaned, the dentist places a restorative material to seal the tooth and help it function normally again.

Composite fillings are matched to the color of your tooth and bonded directly to the prepared surface. They are commonly used on both front and back teeth. The best restoration depends on the size and location of the damage, the forces placed on the tooth, and how much healthy tooth structure remains. A larger or weakened tooth may need a crown instead of a filling.

When might it be recommended?

  • A dental exam or X-ray shows a cavity.
  • A tooth has a small chip, fracture, worn area, or defective existing filling.
  • You notice sensitivity to sweets, temperature, or biting pressure.
  • Food repeatedly catches in one area or floss tears around an older restoration.
