What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are custom-made caps that are placed over damaged or weakened teeth to restore their strength, shape, and appearance. They are commonly used to protect teeth that are cracked, worn down, or have large fillings, as well as after root canal treatment.
Crowns not only improve the look of your smile but also reinforce the tooth, allowing you to bite and chew comfortably. Each crown is designed to match the color and contour of your natural teeth, creating a seamless and natural-looking result.
With proper care, dental crowns provide a durable and long-lasting solution for restoring both function and aesthetics.
Procedure Information
The dental crown process is typically completed in two visits. During your first appointment, the affected tooth is carefully reshaped to create space for the crown. Impressions are then taken to design a custom crown that fits precisely and blends with your surrounding teeth.
A temporary crown may be placed to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being fabricated. At your second visit, the custom crown is fitted, adjusted for comfort, and securely bonded into place to restore strength and function.
Post-Op Care & Recovery
After your dental crown is placed, you may experience mild sensitivity or tenderness, especially when biting or consuming hot or cold foods. This is normal and should improve within a few days. To keep your crown in excellent condition:
- Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Floss daily to keep the surrounding gums healthy
- Avoid chewing very hard objects like ice or hard candy
- Maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings
With proper care, dental crowns can last many years while protecting your tooth and maintaining a strong, natural-looking smile.
