Red Square Dental & Orthodontics (RSDO) recently had the opportunity to visit the Boys & Girls Club of McAllen for Career Week, where our team spent time educating students about dental hygiene, healthy smile habits, and careers in dentistry and orthodontics.
As part of the visit, our team spoke with kids about why taking care of their teeth matters, how daily habits can help prevent cavities, and what it is like to work in the dental field. The goal was to make dental education fun, approachable, and easy for students to understand.
Teaching Kids About Healthy Smiles
Good dental hygiene starts at a young age. During our visit, we talked with students about simple habits they can practice every day to help keep their teeth and gums healthy, including:
- Brushing twice a day
- Flossing daily
- Drinking plenty of water
- Limiting sugary snacks and drinks
- Visiting the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings
We also explained how cavities can form, why brushing and flossing are important, and how dentists and dental teams help patients maintain healthy smiles.
Exploring Careers in Dentistry
Career Week was also a great opportunity to introduce students to the many different career paths available in the dental field. Dentistry is more than just treating teeth — it includes patient care, education, technology, teamwork, and helping people feel confident about their smiles.
Our team shared insight into different roles within a dental office, including dentists, orthodontists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, front office team members, and other professionals who help create a positive patient experience.
By learning about these careers early, students can begin to imagine future opportunities in healthcare and understand how their interests in science, helping others, and problem-solving can connect to a meaningful career.
Making Dental Education Fun and Approachable
